The purpose of this sorority is to bring together a group of talented and driven women and help facilitate their path to success at the university as well as in the future. Mu Delta Alpha aims to promote its members in all facets of professionalism and to strengthen the bonds of friendships among them. MDA strives for achievement in receiving scholarships, leadership, service, and to further the development of excellence in women pursuing careers in the professional fields.

Professionalism means conducting oneself with integrity, responsibility, accountability, and excellence. It means communicating effectively and appropriately and always striving to find a way to be productive and helpful.      MDA’s Chicago retreat this summer was very successful. MDA sisters got a great opportunity to attend the third annual retreat. As you may know, any retreat is a type of getaway to get a chance to review our mission and values as well as bond with our MDA sisters: Alphas and Betas. We got to stay in the lovely downtown Chicago downtown area. The historic hostel offered comfortable and friendly accommodations which sat right in the university district. Our weekend agenda had us explore what Chicago had to offer. The tourist life on the riverwalk was beautiful. During the day, we gathered to meet with our MDA members, playing games that got us in touch with our sisterly side. Once we laughed and learned a bit about ourselves, we regained fresh perspectives by revisiting our constitution. MDA sisters started off listening to Maya Angelou who was a  member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. She reminded us to be “a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”

“Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”
– Maya Angelou

This reminder was a strong inspiration because we all faced hardships. Without others- to help pull you through, we might have storm clouds. MDA sisters understand the value of being there for one another. The MDA sisters also learned the concept of ‘isirika’ which essentially means “having mutual responsibility of caring for one another.” Future MDA is investing in you and other young women- they are our future. The retreat ended with a professional development in communication. MDA sisters understood the value of being truthful communicators. This will allow members to take full responsibility and communicate authentically. We ended the weekend retreat with farewells and a stronger understanding of what MDA stands for.
